BRIDESBURG Comes To The Gene Frankel Theater

BRIDESBURG, a new play Victor Kaufold, about the growing American problem of economic decline and its effect on a young couple, will open Monday, January 9th at The Gene Frankel Theater (24 Bond Street). Previews begin January 5th. Presented by the Miscreant Theatre, BRIDESBURG is directed by Jack Young.

BRIDESBURG is a darkly comic and intense look at five working-class American’s struggling to maintain their sanity, while battling the hostilities of today’s economic environment. Philadelphian’s Matt and Kay are young parents-to-be living in the basement of Matt’s mother’s house. The impending adult responsibility, coupled with the familial stresses of tight living quarters prompts their battle against family, the job market and each other.

The cast of BRIDESBURG features Jeff Barry, Susan Ferrara, JulIan Joseph, Brianne Moncrief and Mizuo Peck.

Victor Kaufold has had productions at the Hudson Theater (Los Angeles), The Avery Theater (Annandale), and the Yale Cabaret. He is the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Ovation Award for best new play The Why that starred Fred Savage, Noah Wiley and James Marsters. The Blank Theatre in Los Angeles originally produced his play in 2000 as the winner of a young playwrights festival. Victor has had readings of other works at New York Theater Workshop, The Flea Theater, Ars Nova, La Mama and the Lark. Victor currently teaches theater at MEdgar Evans College and English at Borough of Manhattan Community College and Fordham University. He holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. Kaufold grew up in a working class community in Philadelphia and his writing displays a true understanding of the complexity of family relationships and working class neighborhoods.

Jack Young is head of the University of Houston's Professional Actor Training Program. This past year he directed Comedy of Errors for Virginia Shakespeare Festival, directed Taming of the Shrew and played Iago in Othello for Houston Shakespeare Festival, and directed Arcadia for the UH-PATP. He has worked with new plays at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Duke Stage Company, Primary Stages, Pioneer Square Theatre (Seattle), The Warehouse Theatre (SC), and Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. He directed Yussef El-Guindi's Hostages for The Miscreants in January 2010.

Miscreant Theatre, which was founded in 2008, is a circle of artists committed to creating theatre that is fresh and gritty, mounting productions that make use of various theatrical techniques that allow for avenues of discovery in to the human experience. Previous productions include Strindberg’s The Creditors, Chekhov's Ivanov and The Cherry Orchard, and Yussef El-Guindi's Hostages. BRIDESBURG is Miscreant's first world premiere.

The playing schedule for BRIDESBURG is as follows: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, with a matinee on Sundays at 2PM. Opening night is Monday, January 9th at 7PM. Tickets are $18. The production runs through January 28th.
