BWW JR: THE AMAZING MAX AND THE BOX OF INTERESTING THINGS Returns to MMAC

Almost a year ago, I took my then three-year-old son to see Max Darwin captivate in The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center.   The show blew my little guy away, and a year later he still remembered the Amazing Max and his show.  When we heard that Max was back at MMAC for a limited run through January 13th, we decided to go back and for some more amazement.

The Amazing Max selects all of his assistants at random from the audience, and each adds a unique element to the show. "Every assistant on stage is a potential loose cannon making every show very different, very dangerous and very, very interesting", said Max Darwin.

Last year, my son was too young to be picked as one of Max's "assistants", and there was definitely some disappointment to deal with.  I was surprised to learn that unlike his sister, my Little Guy really wanted to be in the limelight, and a year later he still wanted to be up on stage with Max.  But I wasn't sure what would happen if he actually got the chance to be the center of all that attention.  I mean, he's four and he's ALL boy.  Talk about potential loose cannons.

I made sure my Little Guy knew that only a certain number of kids get to go on stage with Max, and that we are very lucky to be able to just see the show not once but twice.  I guess Max must have sensed a year's worth of deep-rooted desire because my Little Guy got picked first to help Max with a card trick!  He did great.  It's impossible not to with Max taking the expert lead.  And at the end, my son caught a magic wand tossed across the stage at him by none other than the Amazing Max Darwin.  That magic wand has been going to school with us ever since.  I'm thinking of putting a wand stand in my son's cubby.

New this year for Premium ticket-holders, is access to the VIP magic lounge that opens 25 minutes before the start of each show. Inside the magic lounge, children receive Amazing Max memorabilia and learn a magic trick they can take home. Additionally, Premium tickets include priority seating with front row seating on the magic carpet for children and chair back seating for adults behind the magic carpet.

The return of Max's amazing show features many of his greatest hits from last year plus some new surprises including a hysterical mash-up/lip-synch number in (dare I say) drag?  I had assumed that this show was best for younger kids, but there was a group of extremely enthusiastic 11-year-old boys celebrating a birthday party at the show the day we went.  I guess you're really never too old to be amazed!

GET TO THE POINT, MOM!
• A comedic, modern take on the classic children's magic show.
• Great for ages 3 and up.
• For more information, including show schedule or to buy tickets, visit the show's website.
• Do you think a wand stand in his cubby is weird?
