Femme Fatale Theater Presents OSCAR WILDE'S SALOME

Femme-Fatale-Theater-Presents-OSCAR-WILDES-SALOME-20010101

Brooklyn-based FEMME FATALE THEATER will present Oscar Wilde'S SALOME at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City for a limited run of twelve performances tonight through October 16. Featuring an all-male cast, this irreverent and erotic new production explores unrequited lust and sexual taboos through a distinctly queer aesthetic.

This new production, which includes live music, dance, and graphic violence, will be helmed by Femme Fatale's Artistic Director ROBERT RIBAR, with set design by Jason Sherwood, costume design by DANIELLE MAHONEY, lighting design by WILLIAM NOGUCHI, original music and sound design by BRIAN CHILLEMI and RYAN MARINO, and choreography by Fuerza Bruta cast member BEN HOBBS.

DAVI SANTOS portrays the seductive titular character with JOHN C. HUME as his sharp-tongued mother. Rounding out the cast are DANNY BAIRD, DANIEL DESTEFANO, FRANCISCO HUERGO, FRANKIE LAPACE, EUGENE MICHAEL SANTIAGO, and IAN SCHULZ.

Banned by the government upon its controversial original run in 1891, the wickedly funny SALOME is Wilde's most lyrical and sexually provocative work. Based on the Biblical account of the execution of John the Baptist, and including the iconic imagery of his severed head on a silver platter and the infamous Dance of the Seven Veils, Wilde spins a story of forbidden eroticism embodied by Salome, the spoiled step-daughter to Herod, ruler of Judea. Salome always gets what she wants, and what she wants now is the affection of Jokanaan, a chaste and feared prophet imprisoned by Herod. When Jokanaan refuses Salome's advances, she turns to her lustful and leering step-father to obtain what she desires.

ROBERT RIBAR is a Brooklyn-based theater artist whose directing credits include Dylan Lamb's Alligator Summer (Fringe NYC), Albert Camus' Caligua (Robert Moss Theater), AJ Heekin's Doggy Style (The Tank), and John Guare's Loveliest Afternoon of the Year (Studio Theater). He currently serves as the story editor for two-time Tony Award nominated producers B. Swibel and Tara Smith, and recently as production associate for the Pasadena Playhouse production of Dangerous Beauty.

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish-born playwright, poet, and essayist. Perhaps best known for his biting wit, Wilde authored several plays including the classic comedy of manners The Importance of Being Earnest, which recently received a Tony Award-winning Broadway revival. Other major works by Wilde include the plays Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, and An Ideal Husband, as well as the novella The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Wilde originally wrote SALOME in French, with the title role to be assayed by Sarah Bernhardt, however the play was refused a license to perform due to its sexual content and depiction of Biblical characters. Wilde's lover, Lord AlFred Douglas, completed the English translation of the play two years later.
