Stage Left Studio's June Repertory Month Features THAT PLAY: A SOLO MACBETH and 4 More

Stage-Left-Studios-June-Repertory-Month-Features-THAT-PLAY-A-SOLO-MACBETH-HOME-IN-HER-HEART-and-More-20010101

At midtown's Stage Left Studio, it's all about the writing. Producer Cheryl King has selected five critically acclaimed plays on a variety of subjects: Cuban refugees, 1930's biracial lesbian love, surviving cancer, rent stabilization, and a solo Macbeth.

Stage Left Studio, 214 W. 30th Street, has recently offered its own competitive discount called the 99 Club, which is 9 tickets for $99 dollars that can be used over a 9-month period. The tickets can be used in any combination with any number of audience members, but the ticket holder must be present at each event attended. "Since my audiences like returning to the space, I need to offer appreciation for the return service, says Ms. King." Contact the theatre's website for more details about the 99 Club and other information.

The repertory line-up is as follows:

That Play: A Solo Macbeth (The Critical Darling)

Mondays, 7:30, May 14, 21

Thursdays, 7:30, May 31, June 7, 14, 21 & 28, July 5 & 12

Brought back by popular demand, Tom Gualtieri and Heather Hill's That Play: A Solo Macbeth retells That Scottish Tale from one man's perspective, hauntingly asking the audience about the darkness in their souls. Gualtieri is the featured actor taking on all the roles in the play. No stranger to the classics and no foreigner to entertaining audiences, Gualtieri's performance was raved in the New York Times and the play enjoyed a solid run. Heather Hill serves as the play's director with original music by Erin Hill, and a classic and beautiful lighting design by Ellen Rosenberg.

Grapefruit (Now in its 8th month)

Tuesdays, May 15 & 22, 7:30 pm

Mondays, June 4, 11, 18 & 25, 7:30 pm

The June repertory schedule also includes Sally Lambert's Grapefruit, directed by Theresa Gambacorta and performed by producer King. The show premiered as a limited run, but due to continued audience response, critical praise, and the naturally evolving discussions that have taken place, King is happy to extend this show yet again. Cheryl embodies all the characters, including Sally, who takes us with her into flashbacks from her pre-cancer life, as a singer, lover of two brothers, and free spirit. Sally's struggles, with the medical industrial complex and the specialists who treat her, reveal her heroism in this uplifting comedy about tragedy.

Home in Her Heart (Recent World Premiere)

June 10, 12, and 26 at 7:30 pm

Making its debut at the recent Left Out Festival, Margaret Morrison's Home In Her Heart features the playwright along with Ericka L. Hart as bi-racial lesbian lovers facing impending World War and a return to America. Male impersonator Jimmie (Morrison) and her accompanist/partner Claire (Hart) must leave their comfortable existence in 1939 London and a segregated and intolerant America. Home In Her Heart enjoyed sold out performances since opening, and is directed by Cheryl King. Audience reaction has been so solid that King has already decided another extension will be scheduled.

Stabilized Not Controlled (A 2009 Drama Desk Award Nominee)

Sundays, May 13, 20, 5:00 pm

Sundays, June 3, 10, 17, & 24 at 5:00 pm

Crowd-pleaser Stabilized Not Controlled will continue its run through June, having enjoyed full houses and critical praise for its dark comedy writing and New York homage. Writer and performer Frank Blocker takes on the tenant/landlord battle and a rent-stabilized building full of characters. From a septuagenarian sex addict in recovery and her murderous landlord, to a subway car crowd of people, the play rolls on in documentary format, juxtaposing the differing opinions of people on each side of the issue.
