THE RED AND THE BLACK Gets Stage Adaptation at The Theatre at St. Clement's, Now thru 2/3

THE-RED-AND-THE-BLACK-Gets-Stage-Adaptation-20010101

Capolavori Productions, Inc. will present the World Premiere of THE RED AND THE BLACK written and directed by Deloss Brown. The play is based on Stendhal's 1830 classic novel, Le Rouge et le Noir. Previews begin tonight, January 18 at The Theatre at St. Clement's with opening night slated for January 23, 2013.

THE RED AND THE BLACK is set in a small village near the French Alps in 1828, at the height of the royalist restoration. Here we meet an impoverished 19-year old, Julien Sorel. Because he has been taught perfect Latin by the town priest, the town mayor offers him the position of tutor to the mayor's sons. Complications arise when the mayor's beautiful wife becomes infatuated with Julien's charm-but Julien views her only as a member of the hated aristocracy and begins planning to take advantage of her affections to get revenge.

The cast includes Krista Adams Santilli, Katie Burton, Jeremy Johnson (Romeo & Juliet opposite Robert Sean Leonard Off-Broadway), Brian Linden (New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations for The Country Wife at Vital Theatre Company and A Night Near the Sun with Impetuous Theater Group), Jessica Myhr (Storm Theater's The London Merchant), Peter Reznikoff (Irena's Vow on Broadway), Philip Rossi (Three Birds Alighting on a Field directed by John Gould Rubin), and Lucas Wells (Spring Awakening 1st national tour). The production team includes Ika Avaliani (set), Lux Haac (costumes), Sarah Lurie (lighting), Mitchell McCoy (fight director), Melissa Tract (production assistant) and Olson Rohdes (general manager).

Deloss Brown's first play, Heart of a Dog, was produced at the McCarter Theatre before premiering at CSC Repertory in 1990. His 2007 play The Sheik, inspired by Richard Steele's 1703 comedy The Tender Husband, received rave reviews, including one from The New York Times. Other plays include The Landlord's Daughter, Reduced Voltage, Cleaning Solution, and Jonathan Wild. As a director, he's worked for companies including Riverside Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare in the Parking Lot, Cressid Theatre Company, FringeNYC and the Julliard Drama Division (including Streamers with Ving Rhames and Uncle Vanya starring Kevin Spacey). As a teacher he has taught Shakespearean verse acting at Julliard, and Medieval Theatre and Shakespeare for Writers at NYU. His verse acting text Why Hamlet Delays was published by Applause Books.

Capolavori Productions, Inc., the production arm of 65 year old Italian Academy Foundation, Inc. (501c3) is chaired by Steve Acunto, a longtime producer of classical concerts, art exhibits and other classically and operatically oriented works.

THE RED AND THE BLACK runs tonight, January 18 - February 3, Tuesday - Saturday at 8:00pm, with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 3PM. The Theatre at St. Clement's is located at 423 West 46th Street between 9th & 10th Avenues, accessible from the A, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R or S trains to 42nd Street. Tickets are $18, available at 866-811-4111 or www.TheRedAndTheBlackThePlay.com.
