Works by Caridad Svich, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carmen Rivera and More Highlight Repertorio Espagnol's Summer 2012 Program

Repertorio Español presents a rotating repertory of theatrical productions of plays as well as dance and musical concerts from Latin America, Spain and by Hispanic-American artists. All productions (except those noted) are presented in Spanish with live simultaneous translation to English via wireless headsets. The schedule follows.

Filoctetes: Un drama de amor y Guerra
Directed by René Buch
Recommended for adult audiences
A staged reading in Spanish

Tuesday, May 1, 7pm

Fernando Savater, the Spanish writer and philosopher widely known for his Ética para Amador and other prolific works is the author of Filoctetes: Un drama de mar y guerra. In this work, Savater revisits the Sophocles' masterpiece making it relevant for the present times and adding a comical twist.The staged reading of this play will be directed by Repertorio Español's Artistic Director, René Buch, followed by a Q&A with Fernando Savater and a reception.

CRÓNICA DE UNA MUERTE ANUNCIADA (Chronicle of a Death Foretold)
Directed by Jorge Alí Triana

A spectacular wedding, a savage scandal, and a murder to which an entire Latin American town appears to be an accessory to the fact.

DOÑA FLOR Y SUS DOS MARIDOS (Doña Flor and Her Two Husbands)
Directed by Jorge Alí Triana.

Doña Flor misses her late husband's passionate intimacy. She re-marries and magical realism allows her to live (and sleep) with her two husbands. A colorful adaptation of this Brazilian's masterpiece.

This play has nudity and mature content.Ages 17+.

EL QUIJOTE
Directed by Jorge Alí Triana.

A carnivalesque adaptation of Cervantes' masterpiece. Through Don Quijote's adventures, the production presents the illusion of a utopian world with a festive and colorful spirit.

EN EL TIEMPO DE LAS MARIPOSAS (In the Time of the Butterflies)
Based on Julia Álvarez's novel, directed by José Zayas.

The story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production.

After "El insomnio americano's" success, which continues to sell out in New York, Miami and Colombia, Saulo García brings a new stand-up-comedy show with the good taste and ingenuity that he is best known for. With outstanding humor, "La vida en los Esclavos Unidos" (Life in the United Slaves') touches on themes such as the financial crisis, healthcare in the U.S.A., immigrants' jobs and the lifelong trauma left after the interview for a visa at the U.S. Embassy.

LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA (The House of Bernarda Alba)
Directed by René Buch.

"Silence! Silence!" These are the first and last words spoken by Bernarda Alba, the tyrannical mother who attempts to dominate and control her five unmarried daughters. In this repressed environment, Lorca creates an explosion of hatred, jealousy, despair and passion.
