wow...I enjoyed her performance. I admit that I am biased because I really like her. Unfortunately, I am not surprised after reading both the Washington DC and NY reviews that frequently said she was straining her voice. When I saw the show in Washington DC she did strain a little but I did not notice it when I saw it twice in NYC.

Thank you After Eight for your support. It is quite devastating to see Bernadette's peers consider her performance a weak one, not unlike her voice at the end of "Too Many Mornings". But I think I will now listen to my bootleg of Alice Ripley singing "How Could I Ever Forget" on tour to take the pain away. Her fractured voice representing the pain in my heart and Bernadette's soul.

Bernadette's Desiree was brilliant. Ok, shoot me, but her Sally was not great By point of reference, even her Witch in INTO THE WOODS, a fine performance not among her best, dwarfs it, and she wasn't nominated for that either.
caveat: I think it's possible that I may have seen her on an off night. But it only goes to show the thrill of live theater, and how ups and downs in performances - notable especially for troopers like Peters who go on even not at their best health wise - can affect how one feels about a performance.

But wasn't the lack of a nom for Into The Woods because she didn't stay with the show for long? I thought they didn't submit her for consideration that year.
I didn't hate her performance, but I'm not upset about the decision not to nominate her. I think it will help Jan Maxwell's chances.

Bernadette's Desiree IMO had one truly great moment, her "SEND IN THE CLOWNS", which was so honest and touching, and fitted her voice perfectly. Her desiree also had some hilarious moments, where she could employ some of her skills and many of her Bernadetteisms. It had some odd moments too like her accent and unthoughtful line readings.
But I thought her Sally was a devastating thoughtful performance of an unhinged woman who just can't let go. I guess it's a shame about her voice. But we have the wonderful cast recording and Victoria Clark is about to step in the role now...it is tomorrow :).

I saw her in Night Music and Follies. I guess I just really do not like Bernadette Peters, because I found her unbearable in the former and I don't think she deserved the nomination for Follies. I didn't enjoy Elaine's performance either, but I really thought she would get nominated.

Guys. She's getting a Tony, for being herself. Just like she would have been nominated on the strength that she is herself. The second it was announced she would be receiving an honorary award, it was pretty clear (to me) odds are she wouldn't be nominated.

I am not not too upset about it. I saw Bernadette as Sally in August and was left pretty cold by her. It was fun to see her onstage, as she is kind of a celebrity, but I kept imagining "if this were a lesser-known actress giving us this kind of performance, people would be pissed."
BERNADETTE WAS ROBBED

I can honestly say that I am not surprised that she was snubbed. Oh, well get over it. Does she really need to be nominated to prove anything? I saw both her Desiree and Sally and I felt she was much strong in Night Music. Her only saving grace in Follies was "Losing my Mind".
I am just hoping Jan can finally a fresh Tony into that bag of hers.
BERNADETTE WAS ROBBED

I always thought Bernadette would be the ideal Sally, but her performance disappointed me. The night I saw it she self-indulgently sobbed through "Losing My Mind" to the point where the song was lost and the performance in general was filled with audience-pleasing dosie-do's that were really off-putting. I really like Bernadette, but shes of an earlier musical generation who deliver everything in the script with a tilted head and a wink. Musical theater acting has moved on, as Danny Burstein and Jan Maxwell proved in the exact same production.

Strange comment. Were Maxwell, Burstein, Raines, and Houdyshell nominated on the strength of their being themselves? If not, then why would that have been the case for Peters had she been nominated?
She wasn't nominated because snubbing worthy people is the modus operandi of the Tonys.

That is not what I am saying.
Her performance was extremely divisive in the community, as evidenced by the opinions in this thread alone, and I feel that if she had gotten the nomination, it would largely have been accredited to her status as a beloved musical theatre icon giving her a boost. People going "But she's Bernadette, so..."
Her castmates were generally more liked, with the exception of Ron Raines, who could be argued managed to eke out a place due to some well-placed snubbing.
However, she didn't get the nomination so it's all hypothetical anyway. And she's still getting a Tony, effectively honoring her work in Follies and every other role she's ever done.

I like Bernadette. I even love Bernadette. In Mack and Mabel and Song and Dance
and many other shows.
But she should not have been nominated for Gypsy and she was. She was (in my opinion) miscast in Gypsy and many people did not iike her in Follies. Geez she can't get nominated every time simply because she is Bernadette Peters.
Same goes with Angela Lanbury who was good but it simply wasn't her best performance.
The nominations were for the most part............very fair this year.

"ROBBED?

Is no different than what Jordan posted about Darren Criss last night. Let's even the playing here folks because it's not right to jump down one person's throat with feminist rape culture and ignore the other's.
BERNADETTE WAS ROBBED
Posted by Phyllis Rogers Stone 2012-05-02 14:44:24
Okay. I know what you're talking about, but that thread was already in damage control mode by the time I saw it. I don't know if Jordan was doing Sondheim parody lyrics in that thread or not. I can appreciate your indignity in wanting to "level the playing field" but I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume you're smart enough to appreciate that difference. And I say all that without taking any stand on that Daren Criss was Raped thread.
BERNADETTE WAS ROBBED
Posted by EatTheBrownie 2012-05-02 14:52:03
It still doesn't matter. Jordan's post was titled "Darren Criss Was Raped" and the body of the message said "of a Tony nomination". While it may not have been in reference to a Sondheim song, it still was a completely valid and un-sexual use of the word. And people pounced.
The first part of this post is no parody. It's a blanket statement that with the use of grammar and spacing is equally offensive.
"ROBBED?
They raped her!"
Is not a take on the words, syllables, or musical phrase in the song. Later in his post he creates a true parody, citing changed lyrics to the actual song.
The first part is a blanket statement. And while I "do" appreciate it and think it's funny, Jordan's post made me chuckle as well. And anyone who laughed at it or defended it was accused of being lower class and giving in to rape culture.
Again, not right. If Jordan's post is going to receive a RIDICULOUS amount of grief, so should henrikegerman's.

EattheBrownie, obviously, as you note (I think), I was alluding to the lyrics, which were introduced by Ms. Peters. Perhaps you should tell Sondheim that rape is never funny. Maybe you should lobby for the lyric to be excised from INTO THE WOODS, and then what's that done, perhaps you could start working on THE FANTASTIKS, that show has an entire funny song on the subject.
And btw I did miss last night's thread.
BERNADETTE WAS ROBBED

henrikegerman,
I know. And I appreciate your post. And realize that rape is made lightly in The Fantasticks and is a lyric in Into The Woods. I chuckled at your post. As I did Jordan's.
Perhaps the feminist posters who posted last night should spew their venom on Sondheim or Jones and Schmidt. They were adamant that rape is NEVER funny, even when the word is used to describe something non-sexual, and then they went on a rant about how The Book of Mormon isn't funny and is offensive and that only non-intelligent people would laugh at it's jokes. They seemed to assume that making light of rape on BroadwayWorld would create a "rape culture", which in turn would normalize and trivialize the act.

Here's the skinny:
Jordan made a post, going along with the "So-and-So Was Robbed!" theme, saying Darren Criss was raped, with no qualifiers about what he meant (though, you know, it was fairly clear). Backlash ensued. Jordan deleted his comment and apologized.
EatTheBrownie, however, went on and on and on about how people were overreacting, how there are multiple definitions of the word "rape", accused people who were offended of being feminists, and generally wouldn't let it go. What he's been saying here is a shadow of what he was going on about last night.

No, Bernadette was not robbed. Neither her performance nor her singing of those amazing songs worked. I've been watching FOLLIES since 1971 at its Boston tryout, and Dorothy Collins, followed by Julia McKenzie and Victoria Clark were the outstanding Sallys. And Susan Moniz in Chicago sang the score so beautifully.
