The second was the original marquee for "Into the Woods" with the boot hanging off the Martin Beck.
I also liked the Seussical marquee.

The Nederlander has looked like that since 1996. Those things did go unnoticed to me the first number of times I was at or walked past the Nederlander, though. The thing is, I would usually go down 41st specifically to check out the goings-on at the theatre, so I never thought to walk on the other side of the street (there's really no reason to, since there are no theatres on that side other than the New Amsterdam's giant butt). It's also hard to take it all in even from the corner of 41st and 7th. It was a revelation the first time I walked by on the north side of the street--I had never noticed how much went into the facade.

Well all mine are in England as i have never been to Broadway yet.
The Palace Theatre with its full Spamalot Marquee (though i prefered The Woman in White)
The fabulous Apollo Victoria at night with Wicked Marquee and neons.
The Dominion Theatre
This is my local theatre in Southamton, England The Mayflower. I love how simple the marquees are.

Works fine for me... try doing a right-click and open link in new window. It's Miss Saigon at the Broadway.
Anyhow, for A Chorus Line at the Schoenfeld: "Dedicated to anyone who has ever danced in a chorus or marched in step... anywhere." Very clean cutout of the musical's title.
re: Post your favorite marquees!

Les Miserables at Broadway theatre. It looks much different then the broadway theatre currently does because they switched the facad. When Les Miserables started to play there they were building an office building that almost strattled the theatre. they changed the facad so that it would look well with the new office building.
And the lights in from that say broadway theatre are the same kind of lights that are flashing that say winter garden on the winter garden theatre. that was how a lot of theatres on broadway used to have their marquees.

Seriously. I've said it numerous times, but Broadway needs to get its act together in terms of theaters. I don't get why they don't wise up and realize that the reason why the Court sucks is because its marquee is hidden. I forget it was even there until I actually took notice. It's just a steel box hidden among other advertisements. They need to make everything just...prettier? Bring the Glitz back!

The New York ones look like total crap compared to the ones in London, but that's probably because the marquees on Broadway have size restrictions. It looks like in London, the sky's the limit!
Compare SUNDAY IN THE PARK in London (Page 3), and the one in New York (Page 9). The one in London is absolutely fantastic.

Unfortunately, that is NOT the Winter Garden Theatre (as they ALL captioned on the photo). That photo is actually from the Washington DC theatre during the show's first tryout stop in August 1957. Philadelphia was the next city prior to the show's arrival on Broadway.

Here is the actual Winter Garden marquee just 3 years before WEST SIDE STORY opened. From numerous photos from past shows -- ranging from this 1954 PETER PAN marquee, to FUNNY GIRL in 1964, MAME in 1966, FOLLIES in 1971, 42ND STREET in 1980, CATS in 1982 thru 2000, to even its current resident MAMMA MIA! -- the name WINTER GARDEN name has never been replaced by the show's title. Also, the Winter Garden marquee is quite long in length and does not have that pot/cup/whatever above it -- its always had that enormously wide billboard.
Of ALL people, the Library of Congress should know the difference. Apparently all those other sites are under the same assumption about the Library of Congress and captioned this photo as: Opening Night, Winter Garden, New York... when it ain't so.

'Me And My Girl' Adelphi Theatre London.
Later to transfer to New York and open the Marquis Theatre.
The arm on this design used to tilt the crown for the first 2 years of the run, one day it stopped and they never fixed it!
The front of the theatre was looking pretty sad by the mid 80s but was soon to get a multi million make over for the world premier of 'Sunset Blvd'

Elke, fantastic photos, did you take them? I love the Liza one.
And is it just me or are West End Marquees much nicer than Broadway? All the theaters look nicer as well.

I second the Liza shot. Really nice the way it was taken with the tkts steps in the foreground.
Also, nice website Elke. (He's handsome too!)
