So....I think that the songs in Smash are shaping up to be a nice musical.

How would the book go for Marilyn the Musical?

How fast would we progress through Marilyn's life?

What would be omitted?

Where would you split the acts?

Where would the current songs go?

How would you end the musical without being morbid?

I would make sure the "straight" assistant steals the script for good and the show NEVER gets done.

I really don't think "Let Me Be Your Star" is a good way to start the show.

I think it's better as the Act One Finale.

Maybe It should take place after her divorce from her first husband....or maybe her divorce from Joe DiMaggio.

Opinions?

Oh, sweetheart -- you are not going to get any sort of real discussion going on here.

Let the writers write their show, and lets us keep hoping it shapes up.

Nothing in SMASH thus far has suggested to me there is a musical in Marilyn Monroe's life that I would want to see.

But if posters here want to write one, it's apparent the SMASH producers could use the help.

I don't think the little "straight" assistant is going to be straight for long.

I like let me be your star as the opening number, because everyone knows Marilyn, wither a little or a lot, so having a number like such opening the show reflects upon the fact that we known somewhat of what is happening/ happened, instead of it trying to be like a musical that pretends no one knows the outcome.

I don't know if "straight" is going to be his ultimate character path. I'm seeing him as a touch of omni-sexual opportunistic whore.

In all seriousness though- what are the chances, if the show does well, that they would actually put up a full musical in NY?
I mean theres a score being written by a reliable team and such so I just think that theres always a possibility a real show could come out of this

An opening number needs to tell the audience what the show will be about. Since we've heard so little on that subject, I don't know how to judge whether "Let Me Be Your Star" works at the top of the show or not.

It just seems more like an Act One Finale...but that would be a slow moving show...and Act Two would be really rushed. Maybe if the beginning was more upbeat or something it could work at the opening.

And why is the assistant being discussed? This is not about Smash, but rather about the Marilyn Musical. Go talk about it in the Smash thread.

Now that I've reviewed the lyrics:

http://www.elyricsworld.com/let_me_be_your_star_lyrics_katharine_mcphee.html

It makes perfect sense at the top of the show, either as a starting point for the story or as a number to motivate a flashback of Monroe's life. Or it makes sense at the end of Act I if they are going to devote half the show to Monroe's pre-stardom life.

The problem remains that we have no idea what musical they think they are writing.

Which I assume is why these lyrics are so generic; Marc Shaiman and his collaborators usually write clearer details.

I think the real question is what the show curtain would look like.

Hmmm...The story told as a flashback would be great.

Maybe at the end of the Overture the audience sees headlines and hears snippets of new reports about Marilyn's death and then spotlight on Marilyn and she sings Let Me Be Your Star.
