Jesus Christ Superstar Hello Emily, there has been no official announcement of a cast recording yet, but please continue to stay connected for updates. April 17 at 11:59am · Like
No idea what the hold up is about this! It seems logical sense to record one. It seems like there'd be a ton of demand since this show has also been in Stratford & La Jolla (and I'm sure a ton of ppl who saw it there would be interested). Sadly, nothing seems to be in the works yet.
According to the cast album database there are 91 albums of the score already in circulation (which admittedly includes some easy-listening orchestra albums such as Percy Faith's SUPERSTAR album) but the point is there are too many recordings of this show available.
^Yet the Superstar fanatics have every one of those recordings and they'll buy this one too. There's a reason there are so many. They sell.
Honestly though, I would bet everything I have that Andrew Lloyd Webber is not going to allow them to record a cast album because he likely wants to record his upcoming arena tour of Superstar in the UK with the winner of his talent competition and he won't want to have the album sales competing with a Broadway revival cast recording.
With Follies closed, I'm sure JCS will win the Best Revival Tony. If an album isn't in the works, I'm sure that will be the extra push it needs to get one.
^Don't get your hopes up. Seems like the money is being spent on a new Evita recording. Webber probably plans on recording his arena tour of Superstar so it's unlikely that he would record this revival. Though, personally, I think it's stupid to be recording the same production of Evita again with the same leading lady.
Being an ALW fan, I kind of always look forward to new cast albums... Its always cool to hear different voices singing scores you enjoy and hear different orchestrations (it's one reason I have almost every Sunset Blvd recording)
I had hoped for a new JCSS recording, but I think everyones comments here make sense as to why they wouldn't. I can't even remember how many I have (with my favorite being Steve Balsamo as Jesus from the London 2000 revival.... why he didn't come to NY with that production, I still don't know...) I even have the one with a bunch of rock artists including Indigo girls on it.
Since this new production I believe is using some of the original orchestrations and there's nothing that's making it distinguish itself from previous productions, I think it's going to go unrecorded...
As for recording Evita with Elena Roger again - well the first time was such a mess with just the single disc and with Ricky Martin rivaling Roger as the "star", it just makes sense why they want to do that one again and capitalize on it
I saw this in La Jolla and remember thinking there were some minor cuts made to the score. But I can not remember what it was I thought they cut. Has anyone noticed this, or have I competely made this up in my own head?
Adam Chris- there were some slight cuts to the score- I noticed them too- the one that sticks out in my mind is the sax solo in "Damed For All Time", I know they cut out all of the music under the crucifixtion scene, and I want to say there were some cuts made to the Temple scene
