Rant about the 2012 TONY nominations here

Why did I think that it was always called "Best Original Score of a Musical"? I guess that once the plays started to get nominated, and that, I thought the title was changed. Because, didn't they go with "Best Music/Lyrics Written for the Theatre" a few years ago when Memphis and The Addams Family was nominated against 2 plays.

I'm surprised that Bernadette Peters wasn't nominated for FOLLIES, but these things do happen, and I have to say that even if she was nominated it wouldn't change my feeling that the award must go to Audra McDonald for her magnificent performance as Bess.

I'm delighted that Tom Edden got a nomination for his brilliant work in ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS, and I'd say he should win if it wasn't for Jeremy Shamos' brilliant work in CLYBOURNE PARK. An award to either would be highly deserved.

Of course, it isn't like these awards mean anything, and all that.

Overall, this is a pretty great set of nominations! And it may not be a popular position, but frankly, I'm glad Angela Lansbury didn't get a nod. She's a legend, and she's amazing, but I don't know that she deserves a nod just for being in another show. And her contribution to The Best Man is winning, but I don't think it was her best work or the best work of the year. Thrilled Condola Rashad got a nom, though in the end, I'll be rooting for Judith Light.

I'm also pretty glad Roger didn't get a nod for what was(only in my opinion) the worst leading performance I saw on Broadway this season. I'd have nominated Bernadette over Osnes, but what can you do?

The only real headscratcher for me is One Man Two Guvnors not getting in for Best Play. I actually thought it was a dark horse for the win. I'm thrilled Venus in Fur made the cut, but I've always been less than enchanted by Starcatcher.

Still, point is, there are quibbles (there always are), but I think they got more right than wrong. And yes, I include Leap of Faith's nomination in that.

First of all, it's Nice Work if YOU Can Get It, and secondly, it's Gershwin's, therefore it is great.

Surprised about One Man, Two Guvnors, but very happy that the committee justly recognized VENUS IN FUR as one of the best plays of the year.

Newsies' nomination are on par with what everyone was predicting but the real surprise was Peter and the Starcatcher, bet there's a lot of happy faces over at Disney Theatrical.

- Well, I think Godspell will close soon, no nominations! Even Clear Day got a nomination!
- So happy for Laura Osnes, and I'm glad Bonnie and Clyde was remembered with a few nominations (including Best Score!)
- I honestly think/hope Newsies will win Best Musical. It has more commercial appeal than ONCE.
- So happy Nice Work scored 10 nominations. It looks like a great show!
- Surprised only 2 musicals were nominated for Best Score.
- Overall, great nominations with some unexpected surprises!

I was verrry suprised when I saw Leap of Faith getting a nomination for Best Musical. I thought I was seeing things. I don't get it...despite all the dreary reviews...it still gets a nom? Loved that Judith Light got a nomination for Other Desert Cities. from RC in Austin, Texas
quote by Beatrice Lillie: “Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'”

ONCE is available on TDF for both shows tomorrow. I'm going to see Leap of Faith tomorrow at 2PM, thanks to TDF. Will be glad to be able to form my own opinion about this after reading so much hate/disgust about the show on these boards.

I personally don't agree with Leap of Faith getting nominated for Best Musical. I'm biased, but Bonnie & Clyde should have gotten that spot.

I'm also sad that Melissa van Der Schyff was not remembered for her amazing work as Blanche in Bonnie & Clyde. I haven't seen Once yet so I can't comment on Elizabeth A. Davis's nomination, but I really wish Melissa had gotten a nod.

So absolutely thrilled for Laura Osnes though!

Dear Tony Voters,
What is wrong with you, really? How could you not nominate ONE MAN TWO GUVNORS as Best Play?

And Leap Of Faith made in over GHOST?

Really?

Vern

Over all, I'm pleased with the nominations. There were a few little surprises, Venus in Fur for example and I'm thrilled for Laura Osnes, I thought she was great in a weak show. It seems like I'm the only one but I wasn't really enamoured with Once.

Did Elizabeth A Davis have more than 10 lines in Once? I'm glad she made a strong impression on the nomination group but I can't even recall her role.

I'm still frazzled over LEAP OF FAITH having 1 nomination and it is Best Musical... Uh, no. I would've rather put in GHOST, LYSISTRATA JONES, or BONNIE & CLYDE!
Theatre is not just some petty extracurricular activity I do in my spare time. It is my life, it is my passion, it is who I am. Nothing and no one can change that or take it away from me. All the world is MY stage.

Why all the surprise here?

I understand the consternation, but the suprise?

It's all about agenda politics, as it has always been.

The show with the most nominations gets the most publicity, the most hype for business, the possibility to win the most awards, resulting in further hype for business.

The one surprise I have is how did they fail to give the thing a best costumes nomination? They really dropped the ball with that one.

Really Leap Of Faith, did someone buy the nom?
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I only hope Raines's inclusion - and frankly he was better than Esparza, not that that's saying a great deal - doesn't lessen Burstein's chances of winning.

I also hope so many nominations for Porgy and Bess including best direction suggests it might win best revival, which it deserves over Follies.

Paige's not being nominated should be put into perspective. Even De Carlo wasn't nominated. Although Polly Bergen was nominated.

Leap of Faith's nomination can only be explained by the feeling that there were only three worthy nominations this year - although some might suggest that Lysistrata Jones was a very good show and by far the best choice for the fourth slot.

LEAP OF FAITH got nominated over GHOST & BONNIE & CLYDE because it can make a ton of money touring in the Midwest & South. All those hicks need to see is "Best Musical Tony Nominee!". Plus it's PG material for kids so that makes it an easy sell. BONNIE & CLYDE is too violent and GHOST's set is way too expensive to tour. Politics and money my friends.

And Laura Osnes? Meh. Pretty girl, pretty voice, no depth. I think that was more if an "encouragement" nomination since she seems to be the next hot thing.

Regarding Leap of Faith, I can only conclude that the prayers of the Passionist Fathers were really effective!

Is there a precedent for a show receiving just one nomination and it being for Best Play or Best Musical?

I'm baffled how something can be nominated in that category without having any technical components or actors that are worthy of nomination. Is someone going to argue a "whole greater than its parts" theory?

Basically it means LOF will lose even more money if they keep it open.
Paige was the biggest ommision IMO.
