Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris, producers of SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark, today made a special, unprecedented Tony-related announcement in response to the show's receipt of only two Tony nominations. The high flying production will hold a special Tony Sunday performance at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, for which anyone with the first name Anthony, Tony, Antoinette, Toni, or Antonio will be eligible to receive a free ticket.
“It has been brought to our attention that the Tonys have been honoring Broadway for years, and we thought it was about time to repay the favor,” Cohl and Harris said in a joint statement. They added, “Nothing would make us prouder than to have more Tonys than any other show on Broadway on Sunday, June 10.”
Well, I certainly hope that the people nominated from their show were not planning to attend the actual award that night. I feel this action could blow up in their face. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this. But, instead of making this fun, it sounds more like a spiteful event. Even if I had one of those names, I wouldn't want to go.
What's interesting is that given how the awards have been the past couple of years, SPIDER-MAN was almost guaranteed the ability to perform on the show. They're really just being big babies here stomping their feet and crying.
Really? In such a small community, I would believe it is your best bet to constantly display a positive and supportive attitude, even if it is only in public.
If they expect to keep producing, it is in their best interest to keep their enemies close - attitudes like these can't bring anything good to their Broadway future.
If LEAP OF FAITH doesn't perform, I really hope the Tonys don't invite SPIDER-MAN now. This is so stupid and childish. And I personally don't think it's clever at all.
