Much like with Raul Esparza and LEAP OF FAITH, I don't understand the strategy of making Carolee Carmello's name the primary focus of the artwork and advertizing campaign when she won't sell a singe ticket.

What do the clouds signify? Maybe they are hoping people think Neil Simon is in the show and that will sell tix? I hope they didn't spend too much $ on this because it doesn't do a thing for the show.

Aside from the blandness, Carmello doesn't sell tickets (as mentioned before). She's a great talent, but not a "name." I don't get it, either.

If you can't find a star, make one.

Exactly. They want to make a star out of her and the fact that she is above the title and all ruled apply wont matter. No one will exchange tickets or leave the show if she is out, so what's the harm of trying to make her known? She's a great talent and deserves it. Honestly even if a small percentage of the audience thinks she great and remembers her name it will benefit.

Well, however the show goes,
it's great to see Carmello's name up on the boards above a title!

I agree. From an artistic standpoint, this is fabulous. But if they're looking to make money, it's a losing proposition. I'm all for artistry, though the artwork itself could use some.

I only see this lasting somewhat longer that Leap of Faith did.

As it's been speculated before, they most likely think Gifford's name will be the "star" power behind this, even if her name is not on the marquee, she will be doing a lot of press and appearances to push the show.
As long as Brantley doesn't rip Carmello to shreds like he did the Raul, her performance could keep the show running longer than LOF.

Is it possible to rip Carolee to shreds though? Esparza can be erratic. Has Carolee ever been bad?

No, I don't think it is, she is a solid Actress/Singer.
But many people thought the same of the R.
And no one ever calls her GoatGirl.

I can hear people's comments as they pass the theater...."I never heard of her". The marquee reeks of a flop. Boring and uninspiring.

Well it worked for Gladys Clover! Get that name into everyone's subconscious! But seriously didn't Carmello get glowing praise from critics even when the show itself got tepid reviews? They may be banking on a buzz being created over this "new" star. (And how wonderful for Carmello after all these years. She's so brilliantly talented.)

Ticket selling name or not, it makes me very happy to finally see Carolee Carmello's name top billed on Broadway. :) The show was a bit of a hot-mess in Seattle, but she was sensational. Looking forward to seeing her performance, again.

There should be some mention of Kathie Lee on there.

At least they're not going to dupe people into believing she's in the show.

Wow they really need to make up their minds with this Drood artwork. I mean the front art of the marquee is noticeably different than the side art. Looks pretty unprofessional to me.

"The Best British Musical in Years!" reads the marquee of MATILDA. That's swell, but what about an AMERICAN musical?

Stagecraft tip: Those seashell-shaped footlight reflectors on the Drood marquis - when we did the show, we made them out of jello molds!
