(May. 15 8:39 PM) - Following award-winning productions in the 2010 and 2011 Planet Connections Theatre Festivity, playwrights Mark Jason Williams and Gabrielle Fox return to New York’s premiere eco-friendly and socially-conscious arts festival this year with Acts of Love, an evening of short-plays to be held at the Bleecker Street Theater, 45 Bleecker Street, from May 31 - June 22.

OPEN: The New Jewish Theater Residency at the 14th Street Y Announces Projects, 6/23-7/1

(May. 15 6:25 PM) - Becky Skoff, Manager and Ronit Muszkatblit, Artistic Director of LABA: The National Laboratory for New Jewish Culture at the 14th Street Y (344 East 14th Street) and David Winitsky, Artistic Director of the Jewish Plays Project, have announced the five projects in OPEN: The New Jewish Theater Residency at the 14th Street Y. The Residency, a unique partnership between a major cross-cultural Jewish center and an innovative young arts venture, will provide space and significant resources to five teams of artists, including four days of study, three weeks of rehearsal, and six workshop presentations open to the public between June 23 and July 1.

This year’s performance will feature 30 original LGBTQ-themed plays, including 15 world-premiers and 15 fan favorites from years past.

Directed by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar (a 2012 Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Director -- in his professional directing debut in NYC), the production stars 38 members of The Bats. Performances run June 6 - July 1 at The Flea (41 White Street between Church and Broadway in Tribeca).

An African-American woman who knew full well the sting of prejudice, she constantly searched for roles with strength and dignity while battling the mindset of the entertainment establishment. Often overlooked today, her story and legacy will be told by Tony Award nominee Hope Clarke (Caroline or Change, Jelly's Last Jam) in the world premiere of Steve Willis' Diana Sands: A Certain Toughness of Spirit. Directed by Sue Lawless, the show begins performances tonight, May 15 at the Workshop Theatre Company's Jewel Box Theatre, at 312 West 36th Street, on the 4th floor.

This year’s program is entitled 10 YEARS/10 DREAMS, featuring 10 ten-minute plays inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. (May. 14 1:44 PM) - Double Play Connections and Doing Life Productions, Jane Dubin, Executive Producer, and Director Brent Buell, collaborators on Antigua-born poet, author, painter, and playwright Iyaba Ibo Mandingo’s unFRAMED: A Man in Progress, are fostering relationships and communication by participating in community driven programming. Dubin, Buell and Mandingo have stepped outside the theater to “continue the conversation we start with this powerful show,” says Dubin, a TONY award-winning producer. The three have been seen connecting with many different communities – making African masks with an afterschool class in Newburgh, NY; writing poetry with the women in residence and the high school girls at the YWCA White Plains; to presenting the play to over 200 prisoners and staff inside Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
